Fort Thomas

Named for Union General George Henry Thomas, this city was created around 1890. Built as U.S. Army post Fort Thomas, the replacement for the oft-flooded Newport Barracks (itself a replacement for Fort Washington). While the fort is no longer in operation, many historical remnants survive, including the Stone Water Tower and several eighteenth-century cannons captured in the Spanish-American War. Most recently, Fort Thomas has been noted for the intensive renovation of its downtown and Midway business districts, including newer streetscapes.

Built from 1890 to 1935, the historic homes in Fort Thomas are mostly Arts and Crafts foursquares and bungalows, as well as Colonial and Tudor Revivals. Some Queen Anne and Italianate Victorian houses reside near the former fort. Prices range from $200,000 to $1,200,000.
